ART AND ACT OF BASIC HAT MAKING
This Section focuses on basic practices and steps in Hat making. Like other Arts, Hat Making is done in Phases/ Stages which are:
Preliminary Preaparation of material
Stiffener Application
Clapping
Molding
Drying
Trimming/ Notrching and Coupling/ Assembling
Wiring and Petercham application
Decoration and Finishing
Packaging and Storage
Preliminary Preaparation of materia:
This stage involves choosing desired Hat material, cutting into size, ironing, dying if desired and dampening with water. To begin Hat making, the Base Material is first cut into 1 Yard or 36 Inches.  The 1 yard material is then cut into two equal halves ie 18" by 18" then each half is folded into 2 ( thus, one half becomes a double quarter of a yard) NB: One piece of the Material will be used to Mold the Crown (Upper part of the Hat) while the other piece will be used to Mold the Crown (The lower part of the Hat). NB: Not all hats have brim e.g Turban could comprise only of Crown
Stiffener Application:
Stiffener as the name implies is a stiffening Agent which holds the Hat into its desired shape. The viscous Stiffener needs to be dilluted with 30-80% water to form a light paste (just like Paint) and then directly applied on the Hat material with the aid of a Painting brush (Just like Painting) Some Milliners However mold before Stiffener application which makes thier work/ Product rough and unprofessional due to clogging bubbles of the stiffener on the Hat material.
Clapping:
This act is done by placing the hat material in-between the two palm (hand) and clapping out the Stiffener bubbles from the Material. Confused? Oh No! Just the normal clapping of hands you know. "understood" Thank you
Molding:
This is the major aspect of hat making and shoud be handled with care and firmness. There are two basic Molds normallyt used for Hat Making i.e Crown and Brim which are in most cases molded seperatelly and then jonted together afterwards. NB Brim and Crown are molded together in exceptional cases when dealing with Straw. The molds (Brim and crown) are first wrapped in Molding Bag seperately and the outer surface of the nylon is lubricated with petroleum Jelly in order to reduce friction and adhessivity between the Hat material and the molding Bag. This aides easy removal of the Hat from the Mold.
Molding starts by centralising the Molding Material on the Molding  block and securing it down neatlt, firmly and tightly with the help of the Molding Pin and your Hammer. Repeat this procedure on the Brim and the Crown until until a desired unwrinkled shape of the mould is achieved. Please note that this must be done as quickly as possible before the stiffener on the matrerial dries off. However, if the stiffener dries in the process, a alittle quantity could be re-applied to replace the lost/ dried one (Aithough it makes it a bit rough but desired stiffening / hardening is still achieved.
Drying
This is done by placing the molde material under a moderate Sunlight that is not too hot or too cold. Say betwwen 20- 40C
Trimming/ Notrching and Coupling/ Assembling
After drying, rmove the Pins so that the Materials could also be removed from the Mold. Trim the edges of the Molded material as desired while you centrally create a hole smaller than the Crown on the Brim. Notch the hole round to the calculated or measured area where the Crown can sit comfortably on the Brim. Apply Gum on thye notched area for the Crown to Sit properly on the Brim.
Wiring and Petercham application
Measure round the edge of the Brim of the Hat and Cut a desired lenght of the Hat Wire giving allowance of 1 Inch for overlapping of the Wire. Wrap the overlapping edge of the wire securely using thread and tape. Place the wire into the Circumference of the Brim and secure into place with thread and needle. Cover the wired edges of the Hat neatly with Petercham (Ribbonlike Material of desired colour) in other to protect and hide the ugly wire from showing on the finished product.
Decoration and Finishing
At this stage the Hat should have taken shape only awaiting finishes. Please note that this stage can make or mar your work because it prompts the outlooka nd the final impression your Product makes. In order to make the Hat  atractive and protect the joint of the Brim and the Crown, a band (belt-like) material is made. To make the band, Cut diagonally a Sinamay Material from about  18"X 18" dimension and fold into double, tripple or even Quadruple as the Design warrants. Place the band on the joinning area of the Hat and secure it firmly with the help of a Gum ( UHU Gum is prefferable because it worlks slowly but gets firmer with time and stains less) Finish the two ends of the band with ready made or hand made Accessories in order to make it neater and more attractive. "At this point, your Hat is done"
Packaging and Storage
This is an optional but very important aspect of Hat Making. Packaging makes your Work more presentable and attractive in the Market. It is an essential part that beautifies and also protects the Product. It makes your product Export ready which gives your Conpany international recognition and representation.
